We visited this Mission on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The ranger was just starting a demonstration on the making of adobe. What a treat for for the kids , they learned some great history that day. Later he told me that they switch up the demonstrations each time. We were very impressed by the dedication of the staff here.
Thank you.
Cute small Mission, well maintained. Masses are celebrated here, there's a small gift shop, and a walk to the pass, entrance is free.
Kinda weird to rate a place that was built on the forced labor and torture of indigenous peoples. Regardless of how you feel about missions or religious colonialism, this place is historical, and I appreciate learning about history. The mission and chapel are replicas of the original mission, which was destroyed during earthquakes in the 19th century. It features a tiny museum with artifacts from Fr. Junipero Serra's time, a gift shop, and a nice garden and fountain behind the chapel. One of California's smaller missions. Worth a visit if you're into California history and in the area.
Mission Santa Cruz, half-sized replica built.
Don't miss the State Historic Park across the street.
Very disappointed in this mission… we came on a Thursday, and it states it closes at 3 PM. We arrived at 2:35 and the chapel and museum were both already closed. My parents drove all the way from Texas and were visiting all the missions in the area, and this one was the most disappointing.
Absolutely love visiting the CA Missions. This particular mission is smaller and newer than others. The original was destroyed in earthquakes in the 1800s. This one was built in the 1930’s
The big church is lovely, , the mission was closed with a be back soon sign. Waited 30 mins then left. Dissapointed trip. 600 miles and still havent seen the mission. . oh well maybe next year?
I love visiting and learning more about Mission Santa Cruz! What a fun place to tour to learn more about California’s beautiful, diverse history.
